While most homeowners may not consider the particular type of fibre when choosing a carpet, each comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. The type of fibre used will help determine its stain resistance, feel, look, durability and cost.
Nearly 97% of carpets sold and installed these days are composed of synthetic materials. Synthetics are typically easier to maintain and can be adapted to a variety of styles.

Nylon Carpeting
A vast majority of home carpeting is made from nylon and it’s easy to see why; it’s an excellent choice for its durability, stain and static resistance, as well as its colourfast properties. Nylon also maintains its fibre height, meaning it will bounce back from the weight of foot traffic and furniture. It is also mildew resistant and highly affordable, with prices starting at $10 per square yard for cut piles and $30 for multi-level loops.

Olefin (Polypropylene) Carpeting
Following nylon, olefin is the next most popular and common type of carpet being sold and installed. It is also the most inexpensive fibre, making it a popular option for commercial carpeting. Olefin is easy to clean, strong and will resist both mildew and moisture. For these reasons and more, it can be used indoors and outdoors, as well as in artificial sports turf.

Polyester Carpeting
If you’re looking for great-looking carpet, but don’t want to pay wool or nylon prices, polyester may be the right choice for you. Polyester is not only luxurious, but also crush-resistant. Commonly used in soft loop piles or Berber loops, polyester is known for its vibrant colours and natural fade resistance. Polyester is also easy to clean and resistant to water-based stains.

Acrylic Carpeting
Acrylic is a wool-like fibre that is often used in velvet and level-loop carpets. It offers the look and feel of wool at a much lower cost and is also moisture and mildew-resistant. Acrylic is a strong performer when it comes to resisting stains, as well as resistant to crushing and fading due to sunlight.
The one weak point of acrylic carpeting is that it doesn’t stand up to heavy foot traffic and is therefore not suitable for all household areas, such as busy entryways and hallways.

Wool Carpeting
The “royal family of carpets,” wool offers superior performance when appearance matters most. Wool carpeting contains soft fibres that have a rich, luxurious feel and also maintain their fibre height for many years.
Wool repels water and can be dyed in a wide range of colours, or purchased in natural colours ranging from off-white to black. Commonly seen in cut-pile and textured carpets, wool cleans easily and lasts a long time.
There are a few downsides to wool; for one, its price, as well as the other drawbacks in being a natural fibre, such as fraying and reduced moisture resistance.

Blends
The five fibre types listed above are often blended in a variety of ratios to create hardy new carpets that take advantage of the best qualities of each type. Wool and nylon blends combine the superior look and comfort of wool with the durability of nylon. Acrylic-olefin and nylon-olefin blends are also common, although these blends are more vulnerable to staining.

PET
It's amazing what can be made from recycled pop containers these days! PET carpet is made of polyethylene terephthalate, the same substance found in recycled plastics and packaged goods. It is also the most common component of soda containers. PET carpet is durable, water resistant, and static resistant, though it may lack the comfortable feel of other carpet types.
